PROGRAM

Frank Fetta - Principal Conductor and Music Director
Dominik Yoder - Piano

Franz Liszt:
Hungarian Rhapsodie, No. 6/Pest(Festival) (1857-60)

Liszt pays homage to his ancestral roots of Hungary with

his festive work. Originally for piano, Liszt and Dopplar

transcribed the rhapsodie which retains its essence in the

orchestra version.

Sergei Rachmaninov:
Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini (1934)

Dominik Yoder, Piano

Rachmaninov’s last work for piano and orchestra is also

a work of homage, this time to the legendary Italian

violinist Nicolai Paganini. This is a multi-faceted work of

deep emotions, with the Dies Irae making an appearance,

and the work presents the pianist with one technical

challenge after another.

Antonin Dvořák:
Symphony No. 9, From the New World (1893)

Dvořák travelled from his native Czechoslovakia to

New York to establish a music conservatory. During his

stay he travelled to Spillville, Iowa, to meet fellow

Czech’s who had immigrated to the U.S. Dvořák took-in

the songs of the land of Native American and Black

Americans, and from this music composed one of his

most popular, and greatest works. This homage from the

New World and to neglected peoples is consistently rated

as one of music listeners’ favorite symphonies.

POSTPONED DUE TO COVID-19

March 21 Concert Postponed

Thank you for your support of the SoCal Symphony
Society and our orchestras, the Culver City Symphony Orchestra and the Marina del Rey Symphony.

On March 11, the Culver City City Manager directed staff to cancel all nonessential City-sponsored events of over 50 people as a precautionary measure. Subsequently, the Culver City Unified School District closed its campuses including the Robert Frost Auditorium..

Our Board of Directors has concluded that, in these difficult circumstances, we should postpone the concert that was planned for March 21, 2020. We plan to reschedule the concert at a later date when appropriate.

Tickets purchased in advance will be honored at the rescheduled concert or, upon request, refunded. Members of SoCal Symphony Society will still receive free tickets for the postponed concert, available at the box office one hour before the time of rescheduled concert.

We greatly appreciate your understanding of the fluidity of the situation and your support.
