This concert is presented as part of the California Festival, a statewide music initiative showcasing the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years.
Our concert opens with the world premiere of Circle Overture by Craig Safan, specially commissioned by the Orchestra for this California Festival concert.
Safan is a Los Angeles-based composer for film and television, whose biggest scores include The Last Starfighter, Angel, Mr. Wrong, Stand and Deliver, Fade to Black, Major Payne, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, and music to the TV series Cheers, for which he won numerous ASCAP awards.
The Orchestra has previously performed works by Safan including his scores for silent movies The Kid, Phantom of the Opera, and The General. Safan has dedicated Circle Overture to the memory of Helene Mirich-Spear.
Based in Los Angeles, Brooke deRosa is an award-winning film, television, and theater composer, opera singer, and conductor.
Our audiences will remember her as a soloist in our July 2022 Tribute to Frank Fetta and, before that, as Musetta in La Bohème.
Brooke holds a double major in music and theatre from W&L University. She has composed music for over twenty films and, in 2017, completed her first opera. She is currently working on two projects for LA Opera.
Gabriella Yorke is a Guatemalan born composer, arranger, and guitarist. She has worked extensively as an arranger and composer for video game music. Her style is incredibly diverse, ranging from intimate chamber pieces to wild and crazy jazz orchestra pieces. She is currently a very active musician in the Vancouver music scene and has worked with and been commissioned by several ensembles, including the Vancouver Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, Hard Rubber Orchestra, Standing Wave and Lions Gate Sinfonia.
