There will be two works on this program, a concert staging of "La Bohème" by Puccini, and a live screening of the silent movie, "Phantom of the Opera," with live orchestra accompaniment. Both works have roots in theater, one is an opera (excerpts), the other is a silent movie which uses opera as a place and mover of the plot. The setting for both is Paris.

Program
Giacomo Puccini, “La Bohème,” concert staging.

1.) La Bohème
Very short synopsis:
Act I. Paris in the 1830’s. The Bohemians are in their garret. It is Christmas Eve. Typical of Bohemians money is short, and the landlord wants the rent. The Bohemians deploy tricks with the landlord to delay paying the bill, and decide to go to Café Momus to celebrate. All leave except Rodolfo who stays behind to finish an article. He is interrupted when neighbor Mimi knocks on the door and asks for a light because hers has gone out. Even now her health is of concern. Rodolfo pretends to lose a key, and in the dark while searching for the "lost key" the hands of Rodolfo and Mimi touch, and a relationship is started.
Act II. The two then join the others and the people of Paris at Café Momus for the joyous Christmas Eve celebrations.
Act III. A bitter Winter arrives, and like the weather, the relationships lose their glow and turn bitter, but Rodolfo and Mimi try to continue their brittle relationship until Spring.
Act IV. The Bohemians are back in the garret, living the Bohemian life. The love relationships have ended, but Rodolfo still thinks of Mimi. News arrives of Mimi’s return, but she is very ill. She rejoins Rodolfo and the Bohemians, but there is no hope of rekindling the love affair because she quietly, without notice, dies in the garret.

For this production by Marina del Rey Symphony, Acts II and III are performed.
The production begins with Act II:

The Bohemians, and Paris celebrate, it is Christmas Eve.  All the Bohemians are happy except Marcello and Musetta who are always fighting. Just before Musetta enters the scene in Act II we cut to Act III as a foreshadowing of things to come. It is a bitterly cold winter. Musetta and Marcello are still fighting. And Rodolfo and Mimi are separated as well, partially due to her illness. They do reconcile, however, to remain together through Winter to at least the hopes of Spring. We then go back to Act II to rejoin the Bohemians in their revelries and Act II ends with are caught up in the holiday spirit. Even Musetta and Marcello express their great affection for one another.

2.) "Phantom of the Opera," 1925 silent movie with a new score by Craig Safan, BIO who wrote the score

for our screening of Charlie Chaplin's "The Kid," presented in 2017.

Frank Fetta - Conductor

In this silent horror classic, aspiring young opera singer Christine Daaé (Mary Philbin) discovers that she

has a mysterious admirer intent on helping her become a lead performer. This enigmatic masked presence

is Erik, also known as the Phantom (Lon Chaney), a horribly disfigured recluse who lives underneath the

Paris Opera House. When the Phantom takes Christine prisoner and demands her devotion and affection,

her suitor, Vicomte Raoul de Chagny (Norman Kerry), sets out to rescue her.

These concerts are a staycation at what we feel is one of the most beautiful places in SoCal to hear

Classical Music.  Bring a picnic, a jacket, a blanket to sit on and one to wrap yourself in.

IT CAN GET CHILLY AND DAMP. If you bring a chair, please make sure it has a low back to not obstruct

the view of those behind you.
